Fishing has been an essential part of the Pier since it first opened to the public in 1934. Fishers of all ages and levels of experience are welcome at the Pier.
Fishing from the Pier does not require a fishing license. The Pier's retail store, Ranch at the Pier, sells bait and tackle and has fishing rods available for rent.
A wide variety of fish can be caught from the Pier, including surfperch, croakers, corbina, halibut, rays, mackerel, sardines, and seabass.

fishing rod rentals
Ranch at the Pier, the Pier's retail store, offers 2-hour rentals of small or large fishing rods for $25.
Fishing licenses
Fishing licenses are not required to fish from the Pier.
If you plan on fishing elsewhere, you can purchase fishing licenses and report cards from the Pier's retail store, Ranch at the Pier. Fishing licenses and report cards are available by appointment only - please call or email Ranch at the Pier in advance of your visit to set up an appointment.

- Be careful when casting. Fishing lines, hooks, and weights pose a danger to people on the Pier, in boats, and in the ocean. Before casting, make sure that the area around you and the area which you are casting into is clear of people and objects.
- Fishing is prohibited in certain areas of the Pier. Obey signage and instructions from Pier staff regarding where you may fish.
- Be courteous to people on the Pier, including your fellow fishers and Pier staff. Violence, threats of violence, violent language, personal insults, and any other disruptive or offensive conduct is prohibited.
- Keep the Pier clean. Clean up your trash and debris before you leave.
- Do not climb on or over the Pier's railings or gates.
- Do not block pedestrian pathways.
- Do not cut bait on the Pier or its railings.
- Do not stick knives or other sharp objects into the Pier or its railings.
- Stoves, heaters, grills, and any other devices with open or closed flames are prohibited. Bait tanks powered by batteries are prohibited.
